We Were Women Before Our Time Exploratory Survey
Thanks for your interest in contributing to the information I’m collecting for my upcoming exhibition ‘We Were Women Before Our Time’.
Following are questions about you, about growing up in a mining town, about your experiences and development as a woman. Your answers will be used to inform artworks being made for exhibition at the Broken Hill City Art Gallery. The answers you provide won’t be used in the traditional way an interview in the media or a documentary may be, but rather to create a palette to make art from.
There are two versions of the survey to choose from; a shorter and a more in depth one. And if this format is too annoying and you don’t care about the anonymity, I can conduct it in person.
I have designed this process to be as anonymous as possible as I would like people to feel free to share their experiences and views more freely.
If you have any questions for me at any point, or difficulty using the material, please get in touch.
About Me
I am a musician, videographer and media professional living and working on Wilyakali country, Broken Hill. I have spent more than half my life here; most of my childhood and adolescence, and the past ten years.
Full disclosure, I feel conflicted about the mining industry, its impact on the environment, and people’s bodies. I have also had personal experiences of sexism and misogyny by people who work in the mining industry. However, I do feel a sense of identity in the town’s mining history, industrial movements and the roles women have played in this town.
Part of my motivation for doing this exhibition is to explore as many sides of this very unique and particular experience; growing into a woman in this town. Broken Hill can be rough at times, to its women and to its land. It also seems to hone some strong, unique, and resilient women, and communities. I’m interested in it all, to find the differences and the connections.
About The Work
The art works will form an audio and visual installation. Alongside these interviews I have compiled historical accounts of the town and its women, and collected audio and visual material. It is still being developed, but the final work will be abstractions of the collective information you provide. I will follow up with you to seek permission if any specific quotes are to be included and you can opt in or out of being identified .
